Wine Regions of Texas

Welcome...

This is the class project for EES 6543, Internet Served GIS, at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).

The topic...

The 8 Wine Regions of Texas.

The class has been split into teams of two and assigned a particular wine region. Eric and I are teammates and our region is the Texas High Plains (THP). The THP Region is located in the Texas Panhandle with Palo Duro Canyon to the northeast and the Texas - New Mexico border to the west. The towns of Canyon, Texas and Seminole, Texas lie along the northern and southern boundaries, respectively. The Texas High Plains legal description will provide a more specific description of the THP boundary. Established on March 3, 1993, this AVA (American Viticultural Area) encompasses approximately 12,000 square miles (7,679,969 acres). The following 24 counties lie entirely or partially within the AVA:
Armstrong, Bailey, Borden, Briscoe, Castro, Cochran, Crosby, Dawson, Deaf Smith, Dickens, Floyd, Gaines, Garza, Hale, Hockley, Lamb, Lubbock, Lynn, Motley, Parmer, Randall, Swisher, Terry and Yoakum counties.

A "terroir " is a group of vineyards (or even vines) from the same region, belonging to a specific appellation, and sharing the same type of soil, weather conditions, grapes and wine making savoir-faire, which contribute to give its specific personality to the wine.
